Just to update you on the situation in Dorohoi:

Light for Children raised through supporters over £500, which was sent to Helen to use for thise families and young people who were badly effected by the floods earlier in the year.

Thanks for all your support.

As a result of the flooding around 750 homes have been either damaged or completely destroyed. The flooding has mainly damaged homes in the areas of town by the railway station and the bus station. Of our LFC families, the worst effected is the Popa family. When they saw the water coming, they all went into their loft, obviously to be as high up as possible. The fire brigade rescued them by boat and they have since been staying with Eugenia and George, next door to the GLIA Centre. The structure of their house appears to be okay but they have had to take all their furniture out and have even taken their floor boards up so that the floors can dry out properly. The water came up to just under their arms and was dirty, so there has been a lot of damage but they are gradually cleaning and seeing what can be used again and what will need to be thrown away. The Popa family cows had to swim to safety but are now safe and continuing to provide the family with their much loved milk! The boys were able to rescue a few of their pigeons, who are also living with Eugenia and her family. Mr Popa is understandably stressed but the rest of thefamily are taking it all in their stride!

I've been to see them all several times and have given them sacks of clothes and pyjamas to keep them going. I've also given Eugenia money for food as it can't ben easy to feed so many unexpected guests!

I've told the family that we will help them as much as we can. At the moment everything is still drying but the first jobs will probably be to replace the floorboards and repair/ paint the walls before thinking about furniture.

The flooding in Dorohoi has received national television coverage. The President of Romania as well as other politicians have been to visit the families who have lost their homes and funds are being raised at a national level. As well as all the local charities, The Red Cross and UNICEF have been working in the area to bring immediate aid.
